INFORMATION WE COLLECT
The type of information we collect depends on the type of product or service you obtain from us. We may collect “nonpublic personal information” about you and your family. We interpret “nonpublic personal information” as information that is not available from public sources, obtained in connection with providing you with a financial product or service. For example, nonpublic information includes information regarding your account balance, payment history and deposit account activity. We may collect this personal information from the following sources:
- We may receive from you on applications or other forms you may complete and provide to us, such as your name, address, social security number, assets, and sources of income.
- Information about transactions with us such as your account balance, payment history, products and services used, usage of your Credit Cards or Debit Cards; and
- Information such as your creditworthiness and your payment history that we receive from third parties, such as credit bureaus.
In some cases, we may obtain, “protected health information” about you. “Protected Health Information” is information we may collect for third party insurers on life and disability insurance for loans that includes the payment of such insurance. Among other things, the Credit Union may obtain medical information regarding your medical condition at the time of your application for a loan or regarding your treatment in the course of processing payments in connection with the loan or loans that apply.
INFORMATION WE DISCLOSE
We share information with our various departments within the Credit Union about our experiences or transactions with you or your account in order to help you complete financial transactions or make you aware of services and products from which you may benefit. The personal information we collect and share with our various departments may include your name, address, social security number, account number, telephone number, payment history and deposit account activity. Except as permitted by law, we do not disclose nonpublic personal information that we have obtained from other sources to our various departments.
Under certain circumstances, we disclose personal information about you to “nonaffiliated third parties” (i.e. third parties that are not members of the Credit Union) For example, we disclose personal information about you to third parties to assist us in servicing your Boston Globe Credit Union account, to government agencies as required by law under the Patriot Act, to individuals in response to subpoenas, and to credit bureaus. We will not disclose any nonpublic information about you to any other third parties, including the Boston Globe, New York Times or other employer that you may have, except as permitted or required by law.
We may disclose all of the information we collect as described above, except protected information, to companies that perform marketing services for us or to other financial institutions with which we have joint marketing agreements. For example, we may, with a non-affiliated company, jointly offer credit insurance, credit cards or other joint service offerings.
We will, with your permission and knowledge provide nonpublic information to third parties that would provide further informative literature pertaining to personal or Credit Union related services that may be attractive to you our member.
Should you decide to close or relinquish your membership with the Boston Globe Employees Credit Union or become an inactive or dormant member of the Credit Union, we will continue to adhere to the privacy policies and practices described in this notice.
MEDICAL INFORMATION
Under no circumstances will the Boston Globe Employees Credit Union disclose any information about you concerning any medical condition or medical related knowledge that we may possess to any third party vender, employer, insurance company, or other outside service provider without your written signature authorizing us to do so. Should we receive any written authorization from you to disclose to other individuals or third party venders about information concerning medical documentation we may possess, it is our policy to only report what may be in writing and not to report our assumptions or opinions as to your medical condition. We are not medical people and as such we will not personally diagnose your condition.
OUR SECURITY PROCEDURES
Access to your personal and account information is restricted to those employees who need to know that information as part of their job or position within the Credit Union in order to better service your account or to provide additional products and services to you our member. We maintain reasonable surveillance and electronic procedures on all account and personnel of the Credit Union that is primarily designed to protect and guard your nonpublic personal information.
ACCURACY OF CUSTOMER INFORMATION
We recognize that the accuracy of your personal and account information is critical to you and to that end we follow procedures to reasonably ensure the accuracy of your information. If you find that any information we possess and maintain on file or transmit to a third party such as a Credit Bureau is inaccurate or appears to be inaccurate, please write inform us immediately in writing at:

THE PROBLEM OF IDENTITY THEFT
Identity theft is a growing crime throughout our cities, town, state and country. Each day, over 2,000 people become victims of identity theft and are not aware of it. Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal information and uses it to establish credit, charge items, borrow money or take funds from your personal account. Here are some ways to protect your identity:
- Tear up unused credit cards and other documents containing personal information before discarding them.
- Guard your social security number and do not give it to anyone just because they ask for it.
- Don’t release information to people you do not know especially over the telephone or Internet.
- Review you bank statements monthly for accuracy.
- If you are denied credit for no apparent reason request a copy of your credit bureau report immediately.
IF YOU BECOME A VICTIM
You may unknowingly become a victim of identity theft. Many people do, as you must realize from reading the newspaper, watching television or even viewing a movie or television show. It is a growing problem that we must continuously address and review.
If you are a victim of identity theft do the following:
- Contact your Credit Union, credit card companies, other financial institutions and your employer.
- File a police report if you have had a loss.
- Report the fraud to the major credit bureaus.
